Desi Taco Chat

“Taco” is a Mexican dish, popular worldwide with numerous  variations!! Indian version of Taco is quite similar to typical Indian chat!! Another mesmerizing dish, tastes even better due to crispy fried Tacos

Serves: 4

For Taco’s :

  • Wheat Flour – 1cup
  • Carom seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Oil – 1tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped coriander leaves – 1tbsp
  • Dry Fenugreek leaves – 1tsp

For Stuffing :

  • Dhokla  – 4,6
  • Boiled potatoes (diced)  -1 cup
  • Pomegranate seeds – 2,3 tbsp
  • Chopped coriander – 2 tbsp
  • Roasted chana dal – 1/4 cup
  • Sev – 1/4 cup
  • Chat masala -1 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  • Chili powder- 1 tsp
  • Coriander Chutney – 1/4 cup
  • Tamarind Chutney – 1/4 cup
  • Black salt – 1/2 tsp

Steps :

  1. Take a bowl and add wheat flour, oil, all other ingredients including salt and mix well
  2. Slowly add water and make a smooth dough
  3. Covered with damp cloth for 15 minute.
  4. Knead the dough again for a minute
  5. Make very small balls of the dough and roll into thin rotis ( 3″inch )
  6. Make holes in the roti using a fork or knife
  7. Heat a oil on a medium high flame. Wait until the oil gets really hot, that’s important.
  8. If oil remains warm, you’ll end up in soggy taco shells
  9. Take one rolled roti and dip it into the oil
  10. Then grab one side and slightly fold it over until the end of other side, This is how you make that taco shape [ you can use tongs or skimmer]
  11. Once the one side is golden brown, flip the it over and fry the other side
  12. A good trick to keep the shell shape is to place the tongs or skimmer in the middle while frying
  13. When the roti is golden brown and crunchy you can drain off the oil and transfer it into paper towels to remove excess oil
  14. In a bowl add dice boiled potatoes, crumbled dhokla, pomegranate seeds, chopped coriander, chili powder, cumin powder, chat masala, salt and chana dal
  15. Mix well, keep aside
  16. Whisk the yogurt and add salt, chat masala and sugar, mix well and keep aside

To serve :

  1. Stuff each taco with some of the potatoes mixture,
  2. Topup with yoghurt, tamarind chutney and Coriander chutney
  3. Sprinkle some sev on top and add Pomegranate seeds and chana dal for a final flourish
  4. Sprinkle same cumin powder and black salt as well
  5. Now Desi Taco Chat is ready
